Perplexity AI Leans into Humor to Advertise Its App’s Accuracy

Three more months separate fans from the third and final season of the highly-appreciated Netflix series Squid Game. While the public is eager to see what fate lies ahead for the show’s protagonist, they might be surprised that the series’ star, Lee Jung-jae, has already engaged in another (not-so-deadly) game. Locked in a mysterious room, the Korean actor has to solve a series of trivia questions showcased on a screen.

Similar to EL Hoyo’s (The Platform) rules, in which temperatures drop or rise as a form of punishment for the prisoners, the escape room’s environment changes temperature based on how fast the player provides an actual answer. When asked “How do you remove coffee stains from a white shirt?” the spot’s protagonist turns to “Poogle” search engine (a mock on Google) only to find irrelevant results. As the room’s temperature drops and his frustration grows, Lee turns his attention to Perplexity AI, which helps him with instant and accurate answers.

The next question alludes to a previous incident by Google’s AI, in which the tool mistakenly suggested using glue to keep cheese on pizza. Perplexity AI not only gives an accurate solution but also adds “Don’t use glue” in the process – a humorous take on the Google error. The last question, “Who was the first Korean actor to win an Emmy Award?” puts a smile on Lee’s face, as this is an answer he already knows.

The campaign runs globally and will roll out across major streaming platforms. It is also part of a year-long partnership between the San-Francisco-based AI company and Artist United, co-owned by the Korean actor.
