After being Renault‘s iconic car model for more than three decades and with 17 million vehicles sold, the Clio is undeniably the automaker’s bestseller. And while plenty of drivers definitely appreciate the car, how many among them have really questioned the origin of its name? To mark the launch of the new Clio full-hybrid E-Tech, the French carmaker joined forces with Publicis Conseil agency to help promote the vehicle while also paying a nice tribute to the mythological inspiration behind the car’s name; all delivered as a modern-day history lesson.
In charge of knowing all of history for eternity, Clio, one of the nine muses of Greek mythology, has grown tired of continuously guarding the world’s cultural heritage. In a world she considers too static and tedious, the goddess boldly decides that it is time for a change. Seeking to communicate her emotions, passion, and power in a modern way, she eventually ends up rewriting history. And, in doing so, something completely new is born: the Renault Clio full hybrid E-Tech, carved from marble and shaped by the muse’s breath.
The story of the two Clios (both of the car and of the goddess) is captured in a short video titled “The Muse,” directed by Rupert Sanders via WANDA. The film taps into Greek mythology and blends history and innovation to deliver a cinematic masterpiece that’s completely different from the classic car ads. With scenes each more artistic and elegant than the last, the video’s scenes are enhanced by a deep voiceover. Additionally, New Order’s song “Crystal” further highlights the rising tension of the video’s storyline.
Commenting on the campaign, Arnaud Belloni, Renault Global CMO & Chief Branding Officer, said: “To rise to the challenge, we decided to make a spectacular film. An epic film that could be a perfume commercial or a film about the luxury industry, so we put our resources into it.”
Proudly wearing the goddess’s name, the new Clio is now available to order and in dealerships. Designed in the Renault tech-savvy style, the vehicle has a redesigned interior including Google-built apps. It also features voice control, a premium Harman Kardon® high-fidelity audio system, and four Multisense driving modes for a premium driving experience. The new E-Tech 160 hp full hybrid engine offers responsive acceleration, with most of the driving time being electric. The battery charges automatically while driving and offers up to 1,000 km range.
